A positive attitude is the key to living a successful and happy life. It feels like our minds are so good at focusing on negative situations and pondering over them for a long period of time. Whether you realize it or not, the negative experiences in your life have influenced your thoughts and decisions more than the positive. This is because our brains learn from difficult situations and unconsciously store these experiences.

If we place too much attention on negativity our perception of the world can become unhealthy and narrow. As the scriptures say in Proverbs 23:7 “we become what we think about,” as such, continually focusing on negative thoughts can hinder our ability to live a happy and positive life.

Hebrews 5:7-9 NLT

Sometimes we think it’s so easy to be obedient to all instructions from our leader/boss/God. This is because we have not had the opportunity to be disobedient/unfaithful. If presented with very difficult situations that demand total obedience, some Christians will fail woefully and fall like a pack of cards.

Fortunately, our minds can be rewired to look for the lesson in every situation and to focus on positivity. We can train our mind to break out of negative spirals and empower our thoughts to work for us, not against us.

TECHNIQUES/PRACTICAL STEPS TO REWIRE YOUR MIND FOR NEWNESS:

TRAIN YOUR THOUGHTS

Our minds have roughly 70,000 thoughts a day and not all of these are positive or useful. As such, reframing your mind for positivity/ newness starts simply by:

Watch your thoughts: What patterns are emerging? Can you see any negative thoughts that play on loop? Are there any limiting beliefs that continually arise?  You should identify the thoughts and beliefs that are shaping your daily life and note them down.

Take control of your thoughts: Release any recurring negativity from your thought pattern. This can be done by:

  1. SHIFTING YOUR FOCUS: When you feel your thoughts slipping into a negative spiral bring them back to center and change the pattern by shifting your focus to the good things in your life and about yourself.
  2. Actively challenge limiting beliefsby scanning for positivity.

WHAT ARE LIMITING BELIEFS?

  • Limiting beliefs are those things you believe about yourself that ultimately place limitations on your abilities.
  • Limiting beliefs are your sub-conscious thoughts creeping in and telling you something that is ultimately not a truth.
  • Limiting beliefs are simply assumptions about reality that are not true. Assumptions are the lowest level of knowledge.
  • Culture, environment contribute to the formation of limiting beliefs in the minds of individuals.

For example:

  • “Bad things always happen to me every time I am at the brink of my breakthrough”,
  • “I’m not good at public speaking”,
  • “My parents say I’m not good at sports”,
  • “My boss said will never make a good manager” or
  • “I could never start my own business, where will I get the money?”.

COMMON LIMITING BELIEFS:

  1. FEAR:
    1. Fear of greatness
    2. Fear of failure
    3. Fear of not being good enough to achieve what you want
    4. Fear of not being loved or accepted
    5. Fear of rejection
    6. The fear of success or near success syndrome.

Fear is a limiting belief that takes shape in many forms.

  1. Some people have negative attributes assigned to rich people. for example, rich people achieve their wealth through dubious means hence, they do not aspire to be rich and have negative reactions to wealthy people.
  2. Some people feel they do not deserve or are not worthy of success hence they’ve placed a barrier on their finances.
  3. Some people believe they have to work very hard, long hours for them to get money. No, you have to work hard and smart.

ACTIVELY CHALLENGE THESE BELIEFS, NEUTRALIZE THEM IN YOUR THOUGHTS/MIND IN MEDITATION AND BATTLES OF YOUR MIND.

  • You should notice 3 things each day that is positive about you and your abilities.
  • Make this list daily and train your brain to focus on the small wins. Make conscious efforts daily to kill your fears. One step at a time is enough.
  • When you understand your thoughts, you are able to break out of the cycle of negativity, allowing you to focus on the positive aspects of yourself and your life.

Psalm 63: 6     When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on you in the night watches.

Ps 119: 148 My eyes are awake through the night watches, that I may meditate on your word.

 TALK THE TALK

Positive confessions are simple but impactful statements.  They are spoken out loud and repeated daily to uplift and motivate you.  These affirmations can boost your positivity and empower you to focus on opportunities for new things, not obstacles. They allow you to bring the future into the present. Positive affirmations/confessions train your brain/ mind to focus on your potential, as they require our minds to dwell in positive, self-affirming thoughts. You should talk the talk in order to change the narrative, positive confession is very important in order to effect a positive change.

Numbers 14:26-30

Your mouth is a powerful tool that can negate God’s will for your life. There is no room for complainers in the realm of the new things God is doing in these last days. Words never die because spirit never dies. John 6:63,

Consider the following scriptures Ps 118:1-4, Psalm 124:1-8, Psalm 129:1-4.

Psalm 118:1-41     Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.

2 Let Israel NOW SAY, “His mercy endures forever.” 3 Let the house of Aaron NOW SAY,…4 Let those who fear the LORD NOW SAY,…

Psalm 124:1-2 “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, ”LET ISRAEL NOW SAY—2    “if it had not been the Lord who was on our side, When men rose up against us,

Psalm 129:1-2 “Many a time they have afflicted me from my youth, ”LET ISRAEL NOW SAY—2 “Many a time they have afflicted me from my youth; yet they have not prevailed against me.

From each of the scriptures, we see a similar thread – whether it’s in praising God for His everlasting mercy, or in the praise of God in defense of His people to raising a song of victory over Zion’s enemies; the Lord requires us to “Talk the talk”.

STEPS OF IMPLEMENTING THE “TALK THE TALK” TECHNIQUE: Num 13:26-33, Matt 12:34-37,

Matt 12:37 MSG “Words are powerful; take them seriously. Words can be your salvation. Words can also be your damnation.”

  1. Start by choosing one daily affirmation that you can repeat each morning.

This mantra can be something simple like

  • I am a new creation and am walking in newness of life,” or “I live in positivity.”
  • I am more than conquerors.
  • If God be for me who can be against me?
  • God has not given me the spirit of fear but of power, of love and of a sound mind!!
  • God has said he will never leave me nor forsake me, so that I can boldly declare that he is my helper.
  • Greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world.
  • I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue Proverbs 18: 21.

Once it has become part of your daily truth, try adding more daily affirmations to repeat each morning, until you have a set of 10 positive affirmations to empower you each day.

Look for the right psalms or hymn and master it daily as seen in the above psalms. Eph 5: 19 Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, Singing and making melody in your heart to the lord.
