 CHANGE YOUR POSE – Psalm 42:5,11; Psalm 32:8

A 2010 study found that smiling when you’re feeling low or unhappy helps improve your mood and can increase positive thoughts.

Pro 17:22              A merry heart does good, like medicine,

But a broken spirit dries the bones.

Similarly, another study also out found that practicing power poses can increase your feelings of confidence.  This is a clear pointer that pose which is related to our thoughts, can impact our overall positivity/mindset. When you feel stress or negativity is creeping into your daily life, you can practice simple actions, like smiling or power poses to help elicit a positive response in your mind. The way you carry yourself externally can help ‘trick’ your mind, so even if you aren’t feeling your best, you have the power to turn your mood around with a simple smile. What you continually practice becomes imprinted in your subconscious. When next you feel down or dejected, affirm positive things to yourself and your mind will get the message and act accordingly. These phenomenon is called “body language”.

Body language is a type of non-verbal communications in which physical behavior as opposed to words are used to express or convey information. Such behavior includes facial expression, body posture, gestures, eye movement, touch and the use of space. Body language exists in both animals and humans. A cock spreads its wings confidently and poses when it is about to mate but a hen drenched in the rain has a very sober look and the feather clings to the body.

As a carrier of God you should be conscious of His presence at all times. God’s words should be your guide and map in your day to day actions. There is a direct correlation between our body language and our minds Psalm 42:5,11

“Why are you cast down, O my soul?

And why are you disquieted within me?

Hope in God, for I shall yet praise him

The help of my countenance and my God.

 The guidance of God will take place in our minds. There is also a direct correlation between God’s eyes/body language/countenance and the state of our minds. God has a facial action characterized by a wink in which he uses in guiding his children on the right path to follow. Psalm 32:8-9:

8          I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;

I will guide you with my eye.

9          Do not be like the horse or like the mule,

Which have no understanding,

Which must be harnessed with bit and bridle,

Else they will not come near you.

When God’s word is in your heart, it becomes His eye that guides you and He gives you a wink in your spirit whenever the right decision is made and there will be peace in your heart. Gods words will generate the feed that will generate the signs of His watch over you. Thus as it’s clearly seen from Psalm 32:8-9 above, God is able to communicate to his children and guide them through His body language, that is the difference between man and animals.

In 1 Sam 30:1-8 David changed his pose despite his mood thus he cleared his head to see clearly and consult God on the way forward out of the predicament he has found himself. If you will rewire your mind for newness sometimes when you are down and almost out, one thing you need to do is to trust God to help you change your pose, your countenance.

Everyone has the power to break out of negativity and let positivity be their default setting.

Change your walking style and walk majestically irrespective of your mood. It is not wise to organize a pity party for yourself, change your pose. Stop looking down in timidity, look straight ahead with a beautiful smile that even the devil cannot stop you.

GOD’S BODY LANGUAGE/POSE – Psalm 80:1-19

From the scriptures in Psalm 80:1-19 God has two looks or major poses or countenances:

  1. His shining, smiling face or lighted countenance – This brings restoration, hope, salvation and assurance etc.
  2. His frowning face or countenance – This makes perish, kills, leads to captivity, exposure to shame and all the negatives.

Furthermore, the cause and the effects of his frowning countenance and the subsequent plea for him to lift up the light of his countenance and cause his face to shine upon his people can also be seen from this bible passage.

In Verses 1-2 God’s frowning face will lead to a lack of direction, and walking in darkness and we see them pleading for restoration in Verse 3. When He causes His face to shine upon them, it will bring restoration and hope like he did for the children of Israel when they wanted to cross the Red Sea. His presence was like a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night providing direction and guidance.

In Verses 4 – 6, we see God’s frowning countenance produce anger against His people, unanswered prayers, tearful and sorrowful situations, their becoming objects of mockery and symbol of shame:

4          O Lord God of hosts,

How long will You be angry

Against the prayer of Your people?

5          You have fed them with the bread of tears,

And given them tears to drink in great measure.

6          You have made us a strife to our neighbors,

And our enemies laugh among themselves.

 In Verse 7, the Psalmist makes a case for restoration by the plea for him to cause his face to shine upon them:

7          Restore us, O God of hosts;

Cause Your face to shine,

And we shall be saved!

 In Verses 8 – 13, we see a recount of how God delivered them out of Egypt, displaced their enemies in other nations and planted them in nations not theirs, established them in it and yet when they misbehaved – God pulled the plugs, broke down their hedges and exposed them to danger again:

8    You have brought a vine out of Egypt;

You have cast out the nations, and planted it.

9    You prepared room for it,

And caused it to take deep root,

And it filled the land.

10  The hills were covered with its shadow,

And the mighty cedars with its boughs.

11  She sent out her boughs to the Sea,

And her branches to the River.

12  Why have You broken down her hedges,

So that all who pass by the way pluck her fruit?

13  The boar out of the woods uproots it,

And the wild beast of the field devours it.

In Verses 14 – 19, we see the Psalmist making a case for restoration by asking God to look down from heaven and change His countenance/look/pose from frowning to smiling. In Verse 16 we see the real cause of all the misfortune that befell His people – …”the rebuke of Your countenance or frowning countenance…”. The Psalmist pleaded that God’s hand should come upon His son again in verse 17:

14  Return, we beseech You, O God of hosts;

Look down from heaven and see,

And visit this vine

15  And the vineyard which Your right hand has planted,

And the branch that You made strong for Yourself.

16  It is burned with fire, it is cut down;

They perish at the rebuke of Your countenance.

17  Let Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand,

Upon the son of man whom You made strong for Yourself.

18  Then we will not turn back from You;

Revive us, and we will call upon Your name.

19  Restore us, O Lord God of hosts;

Cause Your face to shine,

And we shall be saved!

God’s frowning face will cause lack of divine leading and direction, it produces anger with his people, unanswered prayers, tearful and sorrowful situations, the people become objects of mockery and symbols of shame. A plea was made for God to smile on his people for a reversal of fortune.

When God saved the children of Israel He destroyed their enemies and redeemed them from destruction and eternal damnation. When they misbehaved, he turned his anger to them and removed the protection he had earlier blessed them with and so they were exposed to shame and reproach from other nations.

When God blesses you or empowers you with the ability to make wealth it is for Himself and not yourself as we see in Psalm 80 verse 17 “…Upon the son of man whom You made strong for Yourself”. The purpose is to serve Him and use it for His praise and glory.

BENEFITS OF GOD’S SHINING FACE/COUNTENANCE – Psalm 4:6-8, Num 6:22-27

When God turns his countenance from a frowning face to a smiling or shinning face the following will take place:

  1. There will be a reversal of fortune caused by his frowning countenance, restoration, assurance, hope and salvation.
  2. He will show us his prosperity and open the doors of heaven to pour out his blessings upon us.
  3. There will be unlimited gladness and unlimited joy will be restored to our hearts more than what increase in grains and wine brings (beyond the joy of earthly possessions and wealth).
  4. There will inner peace and rest of mind.
  5. External peace or safe dwelling – all your earthly goods will be protected.
  6. You will experience Multiplied grace.
